The World Is on Fire: The Spiritual Meaning of Fire in the Year of the Fire Horse

There is a lot of fire in our world right now.

Literal fire.

Wildfires have been burning in different parts of the world, forcing people from their homes, destroying communities and changing landscapes in a matter of hours.

And lately, I’ve found myself thinking about the symbolism of it all.

We are living in the Year of the Fire Horse — a rare energetic combination that comes around only once every 60 years. At the same time, spiritual teachers have been talking about fire, transformation, acceleration and the tremendous changes taking place on the planet.

I don’t believe the Fire Horse is causing wildfires. There are physical reasons fires start and spread, and those realities shouldn’t be dismissed.

But I do believe in synchronicity. And sometimes what is happening in our physical world seems to mirror what is happening energetically.

Watching Spokane Burn From Maui

This became very personal for me recently when fires broke out around Spokane, Washington.

Spokane was my home for two years before I returned to Maui last October. I worked there. I have friends there. People I love are still there. Places that were part of my everyday life suddenly appeared on evacuation maps and fire reports.

At one point, I learned that about 90% of the crew at the Natural Grocers where I used to work had been evacuated from their homes. Neighborhoods near the store were being threatened.

I found myself watching maps and updates from thousands of miles away, wondering how close the fires would come to places and people I knew.

And there was another layer to it that felt almost surreal.

When the devastating Lahaina fire happened in 2023, I was living in Spokane. Now Spokane was burning, and I was back on Maui. That realization stopped me in my tracks.

I don't believe everything that happens needs to be assigned a spiritual meaning. Sometimes an experience is simply painful and human. But I also know that life has a way of getting my attention through synchronicity.

And this one certainly got mine.

2026: The Year of the Fire Horse

In the Chinese zodiac, 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse, beginning February 17. The Fire Horse occurs only once every 60 years; the last one was in 1966.

The symbolism itself is fascinating. The Horse represents freedom, independence, movement, vitality and forward momentum. Fire represents passion, illumination, purification and transformation.

Put them together and you have an energy that doesn't exactly whisper:

Move. Change. Break free. Transform.

Fire Horse energy is generally described as fast-moving and powerful. It can bring tremendous momentum, but it can also feel intense and difficult to contain.

And doesn't that sound a little like the world we're living in?

Things are changing quickly. Old structures are being questioned. Things that have been hidden are becoming visible. People are reevaluating their relationships, careers, beliefs and priorities.

There is a feeling that something is moving.

Spiritual Teachers Are Talking About Fire Too

Interestingly, some spiritual teachers are describing the current energy in very similar ways.

Lee Harris has spoken specifically about fire energy in 2026. In his June Energy Update, he talked about "Feminine Fire" rising and about fire and power moving through people in response to what is happening in the world.

But the fire he describes isn't simply destructive. It can be the fire that helps us find our voice. The fire that creates boundaries. The fire that says, This no longer works for me. The fire that inspires us to protect what we love and create something different.

Lee has also described this period as one in which the old world is struggling while something new is trying to emerge.

Kryon has been talking about 2026 as a significant turning point as well.

According to Kryon's teachings, humanity has been moving through a long energetic Shift, with 2026 representing the beginning of our emergence from one phase of that transition.

Numerologically, 2026 is also a 1 year:

2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10
1 + 0 = 1

One represents beginnings. A new cycle.

So once again we have the same basic message appearing through several different lenses:

Something old is ending, and something new is beginning.

Fire Doesn't Only Destroy

Perhaps this is why the symbolism of fire feels so significant right now. We tend to think of fire as destruction, especially when we see the heartbreaking consequences of wildfires.

But spiritually, fire has long represented transformation. Fire changes whatever it touches. It illuminates. It warms. It purifies. It releases what can no longer remain in its existing form.

And from a spiritual perspective, that sounds very much like the Shift we have been talking about for years.

Humanity is changing. Our consciousness is changing. The systems we have created are being challenged.

And individually, many of us are discovering that we simply cannot continue living in ways that are no longer aligned with who we are becoming.

That doesn't mean every wildfire is some kind of cosmic cleansing event. I would never want to reduce someone's loss of a home, community or livelihood to a spiritual lesson.

The physical world has physical causes and consequences. But we can still notice the symbolism.

What Is the Fire Burning Away in You?

Maybe the more useful question isn't:

"Why are there so many fires?"

Maybe it's:

"What is fire asking of me?"

What are you ready to release?

What truth are you finally ready to acknowledge?

Where have you been holding yourself back?

What part of your life feels complete?

What are you ready to create instead?

And perhaps most importantly:

Where are you being called toward greater freedom?

Because that is the part of Fire Horse symbolism that fascinates me most. Fire transforms. The Horse seeks freedom. Put the two together and the energetic message becomes something like:

Transformation in the direction of freedom.

A World in Transformation

When I watched what was happening in Spokane, part of me was simply heartbroken for a community I still care deeply about. But another part of me couldn't help noticing the larger pattern.

Fire. Transformation. Movement. Endings. Beginnings. A world that increasingly seems unable to remain as it was.

Maybe that is one of the invitations of this extraordinary time.

Not to fear the fire. Not to romanticize it either.

But to recognize the fire within ourselves — the part of us that knows when something has run its course and has the courage to create something new. We don't know exactly what the world on the other side of this great Shift will look like. We're creating it as we go.

But perhaps the Fire Horse offers us a beautiful reminder:

We aren't here simply to watch the old world change.

We are here to help create what comes next.
